Course description

This course, offered by the Monash Institute of Health Services Research, caters for professionals qualified to be involved in the identification, planning, implementation and use of computer-based information systems in all areas of the health care industry, including hospitals and government bodies. The course will explore techniques for assessing current information practices, determining the information needs of health care providers and patients, developing interventions using information technology and evaluating the impacts of those interventions.

Course objectives

This course aims to provide students with: an understanding of various types of information systems used in healthcare contexts; an awareness of the role of hardware and software used in health care situations; an understanding of the system development life cycle, data and process modelling techniques and the skills to use these in the analysis of healthcare systems; an understanding of the roles of policy formulation and organisational change in the healthcare environment; the understanding and the skills required to develop healthcare related databases; an appreciation of situations where new technologies can be effectively utilised; and the skills to evaluate health information systems successfully.

Course structure

Course requirements

Students are required to complete four semester-length units, offered in the semesters indicated below:

Semester one
  • CPE7601 Healthcare information systems
  • CPE7603 Contemporary issues in health informatics
Semester two
  • CPE7602 Developing health care information systems
  • CPE7604 Health information systems management

Part time enrolment

Students may elect to complete only one unit per semester over two years part-time study, in which case the course progression will be as follows:

First year
Semester one
  • CPE7601 Healthcare information systems
Semester two
  • CPE7602 Developing health care information systems
Second year
Semester one
  • CPE7603 Contemporary issues in health informatics (second year, first semester)
Semester two
  • CPE7604 Health information systems management (second year, second semester)

Assessment

Assessment includes a combination of essays, assignments, reflective questions and online forum discussion and participation.
