Course description

This double degree course allows students to qualify with both the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Economics degrees.

The Bachelor of Arts is a general, flexible degree which allows students to match academic interests with career aspirations to create a personalised course progression. Studying humanities will develop general knowledge and specific intellectual skills relating to human thought and relations, such as the way we communicate or how the past has affected the present. Social science analyses and explains societies and the relationships of individuals within those societies

This double-degree program provides a professional education in the disciplines of economics or econometrics and business statistics, with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills. The course enables students to include in their studies a range of social science and humanities disciplines.

This course provides students with a broad understanding of economics combined with the broad teaching and learning objectives of the Bachelor of Arts degree.

The Bachelor of Economics degree provides a professional education in the disciplines of economics or econometrics and business statistics, with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills. There are also opportunities for undertaking one third of the degree as elective units from outside the Faculty of Business and Economics, or from those units offered by departments of the faculty on other campuses. The course enables students to include in their studies a range of social science and humanities disciplines.

Course structure

Areas of study

All units studied must be from the Faculty of Business and Economics at Clayton and the Faculty of Arts.

Economics

Students must complete a set of core units which provide an introduction to the key areas of business, major specialisation in either economics or econometrics and business statistics. All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the Faculty of Business and Economics on the Clayton campus. For details of the units required for a major specialisation, refer to the Bachelor of Commerce entry in the Faculty of Business and Economics section of this handbook.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught by the faculty on the Clayton campus.

Arts

Students must also complete a major sequence, a minor sequence, and a third first-year sequence and additional arts studies from the units offered in the Faculty of Arts degree. For information on arts majors and minors, refer to the `Areas of study' section on the Arts faculty website at http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/study_areas/.

Course requirements

Arts component

(a) an arts discipline major (48 points)

(b) an arts discipline minor (24 points)

(c) an additional arts discipline first-year sequence (12 points)

(d) a further 12 points in arts units.

Economics component

Sixteen units (96 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics at the Clayton campus as follows:

(i) six compulsory common core units (36 points):

(ii) four compulsory units (24 points):

  • ECC1100 Principles of macroeconomics
  • ECC2000 Intermediate microeconomics
  • ECC2010 Intermediate macroeconomics
  • ETC1010 Data modelling and computing

(iii) a major of eight units (48 points) in economics or econometrics and business statistics

(iv) additional units taken in the Bachelor of Economics, Clayton Campus, to reach the required minimum of 16 units

Additional degree requirements:

  • a maximum of eight first-year level units (48 points)
  • a minimum of four third-year level units (24 points) from those offered by the faculty at the Clayton campus
  • first-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.
Majors
Economics

Students need to complete a minimum of eight units (48 points) offered by the Department of Economics, Clayton campus (ECC or Clayton-based ECX units).

Economics and business statistics

Students need to complete a minimum of eight units (48 points) offered by the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics, Clayton campus (ETC or Clayton-based ETX units).
