Synopsis

Writing Dissertation/Composition, taken over two semesters (WRT4000A and WRT4000B), pursues advanced research and writing in the discipline of writing. Candidates may choose one of two options:

  1. a dissertation of 15,000 words on an approved topic selected and researched by the candidate under the supervision of a member of staff with expertise in the proposed area of research; or
  2. a portfolio of creative writing of 7,500 words (or equivalent) informed by the candidate's research into a specialist topic within the academic study of writing PLUS a theoretically informed critical exegesis (7,500 words) which details the formal and conceptual significance of the creative composition.

Objectives

On successful completion of WRT4000(A) and WRT4000(B) students will:

  1. possess highly developed creative and/or academic writing skills and advanced academic research skills
  2. be able to demonstrate expertise in a specific area of the discipline of writing as well as a broad understanding of the major issues within the academic study of writing
  3. have produced a coherent, well-organised and professionally presented dissertation in the field of writing or portfolio of creative writing coupled with a critical exegesis

Assessment

Dissertation (15,000 words) : 100%
Access to online facilities is essential for students studying in an off-campus mode

1 one-hour supervision meeting per week (or equivalent for off-campus enrolment)
