Synopsis

Overview of weights and measures. SI units and errors. Gases. Phase equilibria. Liquids. Rheology and flow of liquids and gases. Semi-solids. Gels. Crystalline solids. Physical properties of selected liquids, semi-solids and solids. Thermodynamics. Heat capacity. Solutions of electrolytes and non-electrolytes. Colligative properties of solutions. Isotonicity and electrolytes. Electrolyte calculations. Ionic equilibria. Buffers. Electrochemistry. Kinetics. Solubility and distribution. Surface properties. Liquid in liquid dispersions. Filtration. Solution formulation. Practical work designed to reinforce the theory and assist in understanding the principles.

Objectives

Students will develop an: - Understanding of the physico-chemical principles, described in the syllabus, which underpins formulation science. - Ability in the areas of undertaking calculations concerned with the physico-chemical properties of chemicals and formulation of liquid products. - Appreciation of the principles involved in the formulation of liquid products, including one and two phase liquid systems.

Assessment

Examination (3 hours)
