Synopsis

Biopharmaceutics - peroral, buccal, rectal, percutaneous, ocular, nasal, vaginal, parenteral and protein delivery. Therapeutic drug monitoring - prediction of dosage. Use of population parameters. Bayesian and probability methods. Applied pharmaceutics - the application of pharmaceutics including the knowledge of the physico-chemical properties of the drug, formulation strategies, biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics to understanding the dosage form and the implications for its use in practice.

Objectives

Students will develop an:

• Understanding of the different routes of drug delivery and the factors that influence the delivery of drugs to the body; and principles of therapeutic drug monitoring.
• Understanding of the sources and consequences of nonlinear pharmacokinetics in drug therapy.
• Understanding of the pharmacokinetics of drug interactions.
• Ability in applying the knowledge of pharmaceutics to understanding the science of contemporary dosage forms and their use in the practice of pharmacy.

Assessment

End-of-semester examination: 70% (2 hours)
Workshop assignments: 30%
