Synopsis

Basic pharmacological mechanisms. Absorption, transformation, distribution, metabolism, pharmacokinetics, bioavailability and pharmacodynamics of xenobiotics. Mechanisms of toxicological insult as well as effects of xenobiotics on the blood, skin, liver, kidneys and the immune, respiratory, nervous, cardiovascular, reproductive and endocrine systems. Carcinogenesis, pesticides, heavy metals, solvents, animal toxins, plant toxins and ecotoxicology

Objectives

Students will extend their basic knowledge of general pharmacological principles to include an understanding of:
Toxicant absorption and activation / inactivation.
Non-pharmacological mechanisms of toxicant activities.
Organ system failure mechanisms and consequences.

Assessment

2 hour examination
