SON4024 - Musculoskeletal, neonatal and paediatric sonography

Synopsis

Structure and function and Ultrasound of the shoulder and knee joints, the eye, neonatal head hips, kidneys and abdomen and the hips and abdomen of the paediatric patient. Embryologic development, anatomy of the neonatal brain and the aetiology, clinical manifestations and pathogenesis of various disorders affecting the neonatal brain and hips, paediatric abdomen, kidneys and hips and the ultrasound diagnosis of neonatal pathology will be included. Particular attention will be paid to the principles of neonatal and paediatric patient care.

Objectives

On successful completion of this unit student will be able to:

  1. describe the structure and function and pathological conditions associated with the shoulder and knee joints and eye and recognise their cross-sectional representation on sonographic images;
  2. describe the embryologic development of the neonatal brain and the aetiology, clinical manifestations and pathogenesis of various disorders affecting the neonatal brain and hips and paediatric abdomen, kidneys, and hips and recognise their representation of sonographic images;
  3. describe sonographic imaging techniques and protocols to facilitate the production of diagnostic images demonstrating the shoulder and knee joints, eye, neonatal brain and hips, and paediatric abdomen and kidneys and hips;
  4. perform sonographic examinations of the shoulder to a standard and ethical conduct expected of a sonographer of an intermediate beginner or higher with due regard to quality assurance principles;
  5. appreciate the need to adapt and modify the standard imaging protocols when dictated by the clinical presentation or clinical question;
  6. describe the application of patient care principles to neonatal and paediatric sonography.

Assessment

Compulsory attainment of 20 sonographic shoulder examinations and 20 additional sonographic musuloskeletal examinations
10 paediatric sonographic examinations
Two case based minor assignments: 20%
Written examination (2 hours) 40%
Image recognition examination (1 hour): 20%
Clinical skills assessment: 20% or Evidence Based Clinical Practice Assignment: 20%

Off Campus Attendance Requirements

Recommended attendance at a one day workshop at the Clayton campus
