Synopsis

  1. Language: Advanced study, through literary and official texts, of the stylistics of contemporary Polish political, economic and cultural discourses. Advanced translation and theory of translation.
  2. Literature and society: Contemporary Polish drama, fiction and film in the context of (East) European postmodernism.

Objectives

On completion of the course, students

  1. will be able to distinguish different types of contemporary Polish cultural discourses (political, economic, artistic);
  2. be able to translate different discourse types into English;
  3. have a command of the major trends in Polish Modernism and
  4. an acquaintance with Polish post-war cinema.

Assessment

Language Test (1 hour): 30%
Written work (1000 words): 20%
Literature and society essay (2500 words): 50%
