Synopsis
- Language and business studies: A review of various aspects of contemporary Polish, including the language of business.
- Literature and society: An introduction to major literary, social and political developments in Poland between 1947 and the post-communist years.
- Comparative cultural studies of East European countries: A selection of texts will be studied to disclose the special social, political and cultural role of literature in central and eastern Europe.
- Study and practice of translation.
Objectives
On completion of the course, students
- will be proficient in analysing the stylistics of contemporary Polish texts, including those using the language of business, and a demonstrated ability of translating them into English,
- will have a general command of the major social and cultural developments of Poland since 1947 in the context of Eastern Europe of the post-communist era.

Language test (1.5 hours): 20%
Oral test (30 mins): 20%
Written (1000 words): 20%
Literature and society essay (1500 words): 40%
