Synopsis

  1. Language and business studies: A review of various aspects of contemporary Polish, including the language of business.
  2. Literature and society: An introduction to major literary, social and political developments in Poland between 1947 and the post-communist years.
  3. Comparative cultural studies of East European countries: A selection of texts will be studied to disclose the special social, political and cultural role of literature in central and eastern Europe.
  4. Study and practice of translation.

Objectives

On completion of the course, students

  1. will be proficient in analysing the stylistics of contemporary Polish texts, including those using the language of business, and a demonstrated ability of translating them into English,
  2. will have a general command of the major social and cultural developments of Poland since 1947 in the context of Eastern Europe of the post-communist era.

Assessment

Language test (1.5 hours): 20%
Oral test (30 mins): 20%
Written (1000 words): 20%
Literature and society essay (1500 words): 40%

Contact hours

4 hours (2 x 1 hour lectures and 2 x 1 hour tutorials) per week
