This unit examines the main theoretical debates in the sociology of education from an historical perspective as it relates to current debates surrounding this most contentious of areas. Students will explore the idealogical bases underpinning prevailing educational philosophies, the epistemological and practical implications, and their relationship to political and economic imperatives.
Research report (2500 words): 50%
Examination (2 hours): 50%
Third-year students will be required to show a greater depth of critical analysis of arguments and issues than second-year students.
