This unit introduces students to a range of feminist perspectives on society. We examine gender relations in both the public and domestic domains. The two major themes of the unit are labour and love. Through doing this unit students develop a basic knowledge of feminist perspectives on Western Society; skills in reading and analysing theoretical, empirical and popular texts; the ability to think sociologically about gender issues and to connect personal experience with wider social forces.
Students successfully completing this subject should develop:
Seminar presentation and report (2500 words): 50%
Class test (2 hours, 2000 words equivalent): 40%
Class presentation and participation: 10%
2 hours (1 x 2 hour seminar) per week
A first-year sequence in Sociology or permission
