Synopsis

This unit will investigate the meaning and construction of sexuality and gender in Western culture, using a range of theoretical approaches; explore the relationship between sexuality and gender; investigate the regulation and control of sexuality and gender through a variety of social institutions; explore a range of both traditional and controversial areas where sexuality, gender and society interact; and examine the cultural representation of gender and sexuality and the impacts of these representations.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students will have:

1. Become familiar with a range of theoretical approaches to sexuality and gender in Western society.
2. The ability to use these approaches to analyse a variety of areas in which sexuality and gender are experienced in social life.
3. An understanding of the diversity of sexual desires, practices and identities.
4. Increased awareness of the gender differences in perceptions and experiences of sexualities.
5. A grasp of the range of institutions which reinforce and challenge notions of sexuality and gender.

Assessment

Essay (2500 words): 50%
Examination (2 hours) (equivalent 2000 words): 40%
Tutorial attendance and participation: 10%

Contact hours

2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week

A first-year sequence in Sociology or permission
