Synopsis

This unit takes as its theme the idea that understanding the role of religion in Australian society is crucial to an adequate study of this society. Combining historical and sociological perspectives, the unit examines the nature of religion, the variety of forms of belief and practice developed by specific religious groups, and the impact of religious ideas, practices and institutions upon other elements of Australian society. The contemporary role of religion is also assessed through an examination of current sociological research.
