Embyronal development. Physical characteristics of blood and the mechanisms of coagulation. Physiology of the heart, electrical conducting system and ECG. Anatomy of the heart, pericardium, great vessels; physiology of circulation, regulation of blood pressure, shock and homeostasis; coronary circulation and pulmonary circulation. Anatomy of the aorta and branches; veins of the head and neck, extremities, thorax, abdomen and pelvis. Angiographic anatomy, pathology and cross-sectional anatomy of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis.


At the successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of embryonal development;
  2. describe the structure and function of the cardiovascular, lymphatic and immune systems and the significance for medical imaging examinations;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of haematological disorders, of congenital and acquired cardiovascular disease and disorders affecting the immune system;
  4. appreciate the concept of immunity;
  5. identify the surface landmarks associated with the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems; and
  6. identify and describe the angiographic representation of the common disorders affecting the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems as well as their cross-sectional representation on CT and MRI.


One written examination (2 hours): 60%
One multi-station recognition examination: 25%
One 1000 word essay: 15%


Only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging.
