Synopsis

Radiographic examinations of the musculo-skeletal and respiratory systems and the abdomen on cooperative adults and geriatric patients. Radiographic examinations involving paediatrics and patients who present for accident and emergency radiographic examinations of the musculo-skeletal system, respiratory system and the abdomen. Mobile radiographic examinations in the ward and operating theatre. Pantomography. The radiographic management of the contrast examinations used to demonstrate the gastrointestinal, urinary and hepatobiliary systems. Quality assurance procedures in respect to general radiography and mobile imaging systems.

Objectives

At the successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:

1. implement and evaluate appropriate general radiographic examinations for the musculoskeletal and respiratory systems and the abdomen on adult patients with minimal supervision;
2. modify and adapt basic radiographic methods, techniques and protection strategies for paediatric, geriatric and mobile imaging examinations of the musculoskeletal system, chest and abdomen under supervision;
3. demonstrate an understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to the clinical management of paediatrics, geriatrics and patients in accident and emergency situations;
4. apply quality assurance principles to general radiography and mobile imaging systems;
5. apply the principles of body section radiography;
6. identify personal learning goals in respect to the development of professional expertise in paediatric, geriatric and mobile imaging examinations of the musculoskeletal system, chest and abdomen;
7. manage a fluoroscopic screening session in terms of the radiographer's role, the imaging team and duty of care to the patient;
8. appreciate the nature of the professional inter-relationship between all members of the medical imaging team during diagnostic imaging procedures; and
9. evaluate radiographs/images of the gastrointestinal, urinary and hepatobiliary systems in terms of the condition of the patient, the clinical question, anatomy and image quality factors.

Only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Radiography and Medical Imaging.
