Synopsis

The international system is currently undergoing a far-reaching process of transformation. This unit examines the political-economy of large-scale international change, focussing on the relative importance of four key forces in modern international history: economic rationality, capitalism, war-fighting and ideology. Divided into three parts: the first concentrates on the rise of sovereign states in Europe, the second on the evolution of the international system between the seventeenth and early twentieth centuries, the third on post-1945 developments. In this final part, students are introduced to regime theory, French regulation theory, long-cycle theory, and ideas of globalisation.

Assessment

One essay (3000 words): 60%
One examination (1.5 hours): 30% +o Tutorial participation: 10%
Third-year students demonstrate wider reading, and greater understanding by answering exam questions of a higher conceptual standard than those required of second-year students.
