Synopsis

The controlling and policing of protest in a modern liberal democratic society. Theories of conflict, collective violence, police intervention, policing by consent and public order. Specific cases of the policing of protest to be studied include the civil rights movement in the USA, racial unrest in Great Britain, the British coalminers' strike of 1984-85, global protests, major industrial conflicts in Australia, the anti-Vietnam War moratorium and anti-Springbok marches, and recent environmental protests.
