Synopsis
This unit covers
- Orchestral lessons, rehearsals and concert performances of selected works,
- the socio-historical and theoretical study of music and its repertoire in context, and
- guidance in composing works in selected Asian local style(s).
Objectives
On successful completion of this unit, the student will have:
- Consolidated performance skills on the core instruments of the relevant ensemble or orchestra (from Java, Bali, Sunda, Sumatra, or India, or Thailand).
- Become familiar with performance-related theories of relevant musical tunings, modes, tempi, rhythmic and melodic tendencies, and structures.
- Studied the social context of the music and its use in accompanying theatre and dance.
- The ability to discuss and write about the music cogently.
- The ability to compose a work in an accepted style in the music-culture studied.
Assessment
Performance (including practice/performance diary): 50%
Music theory assignment: 10%
Essay (2000 words): 40% OR Composition assignment: 40%
Contact hours
2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour practical performance class) per week
Prerequisites
Previous relevant practical experience and audition.
