Clayton Second semester 2007 (Off-campus)
The unit will provide a structured introduction to the causes and mechanisms of fracture, and provide a methodology for analysing fractured components. Specific topics include the consequences of failure, basic stress analysis, linear elastic fracture mechanics (Griffith criterion, stress concentration, stress intensity factors, geometry effects, design philosophy, corrections for plasticity, plane strain LEFM criteria, Australian standards for testing), fractography and microstructures of fracture (ductile and brittle failure, fatigue, creep, stress corrosion cracking). Case studies will form a vital part of this unit.
