Synopsis

The nature of managerial work in organisations; theories of management and their historical development; the management of people as individuals and in groups; the importance of leadership and motivation; the principles by which change is introduced into organisations; and the key factors in the organisation's environment that impact on how managers and organisations work.

Objectives

The learning objectives of this unit are to:

• define management and summarise the evolution of management ideas;
• discuss the key factors in the organisation?s environment that impact on how managers and organisations work;
• identify factors that influence individual and group behaviour in organisational settings and illustrate how managers can make use of these factors;
• describe how decision-making, planning, leading, organising and controlling should be handled in organisations;
• examine the impact of change, social responsibility and managerial ethics on individuals and organisations.

Assessment

Participation in tutorials: 10%
Assignment 1 (1500 words): 15%
Assignment 2 (2500 words): 25%
Examination: (2 hours) 50%
