Synopsis
The unit will examine wine regulation from the vine to the glass. It will therefore cover:
- Law of land use for viticulture
- Laws protecting grape varieties
- Laws covering methods of wine production
- Laws on labelling: Geographical Indicators, Trade Marks, Consumer Information, Quality indicators
- The EU-Australia Wine Agreements
- Wine and the World Trade Organization
- Commercial usages in the wine trade in Europe and Australia
- Taxation of wine in Europe and Australia
Objectives
At the completion of this unit, students should:
- Understand the framework of wine regulation in France, Italy, Germany the European Union and Australia;
- Understand the policy underlying different forms of wine regulation
- Be able to evaluate and formulate policies to regulate the wine industry
- Appreciate the different forms of intellectual property protection for grape varieties and wines
- Appreciate the international dimensions of wine identity protection
- Understand the special commercial aspects of the European, Australian and international wine trade
- Understand the different methods of taxing wine in Europe and Australia
