Synopsis

This unit is an introductory guide to the area of regulatory studies. It examines the varying nature of regulation and the justifications for control, through regulation of both state and non-state origin. It encompasses regulation of both individual and organisational behaviour.

Objectives

• Understand the wide nature of what may be considered regulation
• Understand the reasons which may justify regulation
• Understand the institutions which regulate
• Understand the variety of different strategies and techniques which may be used in regulation, and their juridical nature
• Understand threshold questions involved in the global dimension of regulation.

Assessment

Essay (1,500 words): 20%
Essay (6,000 words): 80%
