Synopsis

In this unit, effective teaching is viewed as a continually evolving practice based on review, reflection, and revision. The varied aspects and conceptions of student assessment are examined in a systematic way. The issue of student diversity is raised and examined for its impact on assessment. The relationship between assessment and student learning is explored within participants' own teaching contexts. Strategies for reviewing and improving assessment practices are also investigated.

Objectives

On successful completion of the unit participants are expected to have improved their abilities. Distinguish the purposes of assessment practices in their teaching contexts. Apply relevant key concepts when planning and/or employing assessment tasks. Design assessment tasks that ensure variety and complexity. Formulate methods for communicating their assessment purposes, requirements and expectations to students. Devise techniques for providing quality and timely feedback to their students.

First set of written assignments (2000 words) 50%
Second set of written assignment (2000 words) 50%
