6 points, SCA Band 1, 0.125 EFTSL

Undergraduate Faculty of Arts

Leader: Patrick Durel

Clayton Second semester 2007 (Day)

This unit builds upon the skills developed in FRN3090 with particular attention to specific expository techniques: synthese (written) and expose (oral). Students will continue to familiarise themselves with issues in contemporary France, with emphasis on documents representative of the discourses of the social sciences. They will further develop their critical awareness of these issues. The unit constitutes an excellent preparation for the DALF exam (B3, B4), a prerequisite when seeking entry to most postgraduate courses in French universities and applying for French government scholarships.

At the conclusion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate their mastery of advanced analytical, expository and argumentative skills in the context of

  1. writing a synthesis of several documents; and
  2. presenting an expose on a given topic after 60mins of preparation.

Students are also expected to reinforce and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the main socio-cultural issues in France today.
