Undergraduate Faculty of Arts

Leader: Patrick Durel

Clayton First semester 2007 (Day)

This unit builds on the skills acquired in French Studies 7 and 8. Through homework prepared under guidance and class tutorials, it will help students to refine their written and oral proficiency in the areas of exposition and argumentation. Analytical work on selected documents will allow students to develop a critical awareness of some of the main socio-cultural issues in the French-speaking world. The unit constitutes an excellent preparation for the DALF exam (B1 and B2 units), a prerequisite when seeking entry to most postgraduate courses in French universities and applying for French government scholarships.

At the conclusion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate their mastery of advanced analytical, expository and argumentative skills in the context of

  1. essay writing,
  2. written and oral compte rendu activities.

They should also be able to apply these skills to the reading and presentation of in-depth articles taken from publications such as Le Monde Diplomatique, Alternatives economiques, etc.
Students will also be expected to present an informed viewpoint on some of the main socio cultural issues in France today.
