Synopsis

This unit examines the changing contexts, organisation and relationships of work and learning. Political, social and economic forces that are transforming work and learning are analysed, including global trends towards a knowledge economy, flexible workforces and learning societies. Students will investigate the implications of changes to work and learning for both educators and learners in post-compulsory education and training settings, including the workplace and community. Students will explore how such changes are creating new learning spaces, reconstituting the identities of educators and learners, and shaping the work and learning careers of young and older adult learners.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

1. understand theories, concepts and research about the changing nature of education, work and learning;
2. analyse the political, economic and social forces that are reshaping contemporary contexts of, and spaces for, work and learning;
3. identify the implications of such changes for the identities and learning careers of educators and learners in post-compulsory education and training settings, including the workplace and community; and
4. demonstrate improved skills in research and written and oral presentation, through projects relating to their work contexts and learning careers.

Assessment

Four assignments equivalent to 8,000 words:
Assignment 1: Synopsis/ presentation of text (700 words) 5%: (Objective 1 and 4)
Assignment 2: Debate or Reading Review (1800 words) 20%: (Objectives 1, 2 & 4)
Assignment 3: Class presentation (1500 words) 15%: (Objectives 1, 3 and 4)
Assignment 4: Case study report (4000 words) 60%: (Objectives 1-4).
