The field placement (practicum) develops a range of professional skills and acquaints students with issues of professional ethics and practice in counselling. Students complete one placement where they are required to spend a total of 280 hours, of which 80 hours are 'contact' hours (face to face counselling) and 200 hours are 'non contact'. Students are also required to participate in weekly online discussion groups and postings throughout the duration of the placement.
Upon successful completion of the field placement, students should have developed advanced knowledge and skills in professional practice and competency; the implementation of ethical principles in field practice; writing reports and case notes; making appropriate specialist and agency referrals. They should have an advanced knowledge of local human services systems and an understanding of legal and ethical principles relevant to the field of counselling.
A written case report (4,000 words): 60%
Supervisor Evaluation (4,000 word equivalents): 40% (comprising 30% Field Supervisor
10% University supervisor). Placement Hours: 280 Hours (35 days equivalent) of counselling experience, including a minimum of 80 client contact hours.
