This unit focuses on how content can be taught through a foreign or second language. Examples of successful models of content-based teaching will be presented.
Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to understand the process of language acquisition through content-based teaching; examine and reflect upon the implementation of a content-based approach in their particular education setting; devise language strategies (verbal and non-verbal) for teaching subject matter content in their particular language; design and trial at least one content-based series of lessons for one of their classes.
Critical review of a set of published materials designed for content-based teaching (2000 words): 25%
Design of at least 5 different materials for a content-based unit (3000 words) accompanied by a rationale (1500 words): 50%
Annotated bibliography of 6 references (2500 words equiv.): 25%
3-hour seminar and 12 hours individual study and library time per week
