Synopsis

This unit builds on the concepts introduced in EDF5464. The major focus of this unit will be to further develop strategies and pedagogy appropriate for teaching Chemistry in Years 7 to 12.

Objectives

The objectives of this unit are to realise and justify the importance of teaching Chemistry in the secondary school curriculum; to demonstrate an awareness of issues associated with the study of Chemistry. These include the relationship between science, technology and society; real world chemistry; the barriers raised by traditional science and chemistry curricula. Students will have developed appropriate pedagogical practices for the teaching of chemistry.

Assessment

Assignment 1: Teaching portfolio (2000 words): 50%
Assignment 2: Curriculum (2000 words):50%
Student participation in the unit is vital and an 80% attendance requirement is required so students can fully participate in the workshops via attendance or on-line chat forum. A successful completion of practicum is required.
