Preparation for teaching of music in post-primary schools, initially focussing on lesson development, presentation and evaluation. Current issues in class music teaching. Methodologies, content, resources and music education principles such as those of Orff, Kodaly, Schafer and Swanwick. Issues including classroom composition, music technology, mixed ensembles, and strategies for music listening.
The broad aims of this unit are to develop and prepare effective learning episodes in school class music education; to become familiar with the range of approaches and resources available in classroom music education; to develop an understanding of and skills in the teaching of class music.
Assessment: Biographical statement (ungraded hurdle requirement), Reflection on teaching: 50%, Teaching material development 50%
Student participation in the unit is vital either on-campus or via the on-line forum.
