Synopsis

This unit develops understanding of effective teaching and learning in SOSE through studies of various practices including discipline based and integrated curriculum models. Students study local, national and international curriculum guidelines. Students will develop skills in varied methodologies and study construction of courses, evaluation, assessment and reporting.

Objectives

The main objectives of this unit is to help the participants to become effective SOSE teachers. The unit, which is designed around the weekly lecture and workshops, has been designed to contribute to your ability to increase your students' ability to understand and participate in their society; develop appropriate strategies and techniques for teaching SOSE; devise, adapt, interpret and use courses, units, and learning materials to enhance your classroom strategies; demonstrate an understanding of contemporary trends in Social Education teaching, and continue to explore and develop more effective ways of teaching after your pre-service teacher education.

Assessment

(On-campus students) :Two assignments (2,000 words equivalent): 75% class participation: 25%
An 80% attendance requirement is required so students can fully participate in the workshops. (Off-campus students): Three assignments (4,000 words equivalent)

Prerequisites

Students should have a major - or two minor studies in the social science/humanities fields.
