Synopsis

This unit is an introduction to the contribution of geography to the education of secondary students both as a separate discipline and as an element of a more integrated curriculum. Studies include ways of approaching teaching, learning and assessment in geography and how to access a range of resources and technologies.

Objectives

As a result of studying this unit and EDF5441 Geography education B students are expected to understand the scope and purpose of school Geography; plan, resource, teach and assess Geography lessons and field activities; develop units of work which meet the requirements of curriculum documents for Years 7-10 and the post compulsory years 11 and 12; access, use and evaluate the role of Information and Communication Technologies in Geographic education; respond to current ideas about how students learn and apply them in their Geography classes; understand the role of Geography both as a separate discipline and as part of an integrated curriculum; understand the role of Georgraphic education in Civics and Citzenship Education.

Assessment

Fieldwork assignment 50%, Resources preparation 50%

Minor sequence in Geography at tertiary level.
