Synopsis

In the early part of this unit, students will attend a series of seminars presented by staff and visitors to the faculty on topics that reflect current educational issues. They will study various research methods commonly employed for studying such issues. Students will focus on the preparation of a research proposal and engage in dialogue with other students and staff about their proposal. They will carry out a small scale study leading to the writing of their honours thesis in the later part of the year.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should have gained an understanding of a variety of educational issues; an understanding of a range of research methods that can be appropriately employed to study them; an understanding of a range of theoretical standpoints from which to frame a research problem and for devising an issue appropriate for investigation; skills in the preparation and design of a research proposal; skills in writing a thesis.
