Synopsis

This unit will address issues in Primary School Art and Music. Students will participate in workshops that explore classroom music making, utilising a variety of educational approaches. Students will extend their evaluative and teaching skills and develop an understanding of the teaching of Arts in Primary School. Guidance and workshops about children's art and music creation will be provided. Activities suitable for use in both Art and Music classes will be offered

Objectives

On completion of this unit students should have:

  1. an understanding of basic art and music concepts;
  2. basic skills in playing classroom instruments;
  3. experience in creating musical and visual art works;
  4. an understanding of and a critical approach towards current curriculum documents;
  5. confidence in planning music and art activities which will foster children's abilities to communicate through music and art;
  6. an understanding of how music and art may be integrated with other curriculum areas and contexts;
  7. knowledge and understanding in using a variety of assessment techniques to evaluate student learning and development in music and art;
  8. begun to adopt a reflective approach to teaching music and art.

Assessment

Assignment 1: Primary Art Portfolio: 2000 words equivalent: 50%
Assignment 2: Music test: 2000 words equivalent: 50%
