Synopsis

This unit will focus on: Leading a team in integrated curriculum development; planning to meet the needs of individuals and groups of children (3-5 year olds); the interface between teaching practice and new theories of learning and development; learning as a process and the role of the teacher in facilitating that process. Students will undertake twenty-five days of supervised practicum in an early childhood centre for 3-5 year old children.

Objectives

As a result of studying this unit students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a variety of methods of curriculum development and planning in early childhood settings (with an emphasis on meeting the needs of 3-5 year olds); skills in critiquing a range of approaches to observing children; skill at planning, implementing, evaluating and reflecting on an effective method of programming that meets community, institutional and personal needs; understanding of the limitations and strengths of the approaches adopted locally, nationally and internationally, and be equipped to engage in future redevelopments of curricula and observational approaches; ability to work effectively as a member of a team; competence in carrying out a range of administrative tasks associated with working in an early childhood service; an attitude of enjoyment in teaching; a willingness to undertake teaching and management tasks on practicum placements; and reflection, confidentiality and professionalism in regard to teaching practice.

Assessment: Poster (1000 words): 20%
Report (3000 words): 75%
Hurdle requirement: Satisfactory completion of practicum and all tutorial tasks.
