Synopsis

This unit will examine the design and implementation of appropriate programs to meet the individual needs, strengths and interests of children in the junior primary school. The role of parents in the education of young children and the transition between early childhood services and the school will be examined.

Objectives

It is anticipated that as an outcome of this study students will be able to identify key development and learning factors specific to children aged 5-8 years; understand the importance of play and how it can be incorporated into programs/curriculum for children in the junior school; demonstrate respect for and respond appropriately to young children's socio-cultural backgrounds; appreciate the responsibilities required to work in partnerships with families and professional teams; demonstrate an understanding of the research and theory related to curriculum/program planning for children 5-8 years.

Assessment

Research project (2400 words): 60%
Literature review (1600 words): 40%
Hurdle requirement: 80% attendance at lectures/tutorials
