Synopsis

An intensive introductory program in European music and arts including lectures, concerts, opera and museum visits on location in Central Europe [The itinerary may include visits to several of these countries : Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Germany]. The summer school will last approximately four weeks.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the history of German music in the context of the places visited in the tour; demonstrate an appreciation of the relationship between music and the other arts (eg architecture, visual arts) as observed during the tour; appreciate the relationship between musical or performance style and the buildings, purposes and instruments for which music was designed.

reflective journal [1600 words]: 40%
