Synopsis

This unit will focus on: The importance of a range of arts experiences, including music, creative movement, visual art, and drama, for children aged 0-8 years. Philosophical and pedagogical issues in the arts and early childhood education. The role of the educator as facilitator of children's creative, aesthetic and artistic development. The arts in a multi-cultural society. Young children with special needs and abilities.

Objectives

As a result of participating in this unit students will gain opportunities to develop understanding, skills and teaching experience in a range of developmentally appropriate early childhood expressive arts approaches; experience the practical aspects of both performing and visual arts methodologies; extend understandings and skills in the areas of early childhood Music, Dance and Drama through creating, performing and evaluating tasks; design and construct at least two puppets which may be used in multi arts performances; develop skills in design, layout and presentation with the aid of a computer.

Written assignment (1500 words): 35%
Practical work (equivalent 2500 words): 65%
Hurdle: 80% attendance
