Synopsis

This unit provides students with an opportunity to reflect on representations of teachers and teaching; values, expectations and images of teaching formed by personal experience; the role of media and text in social views of the teacher; the roles of teachers in modern society, especially Australia; the social status of teachers; the formation, growth and regulation of teachers; their relationship to the state and different employers; gender relations in teaching; and teachers' membership of and participation in school and education communities.

Objectives

By the completion of this unit you should have developed an understanding of the range of roles and obligations faced by teachers; be able to situate teachers' work in the social, educational and cultural milieu; have examined and analysed the many depictions and representations in film, literature and other media which have shaped society's images of the teacher; have critiqued the inspirational role depicted of teachers; have examined in detail the world of work of the modern teacher; demonstrate an understanding of the multifaceted nature of the teachers' world; demonstrate an understanding of the place and role of teachers in modern society and the ways in which historical, political and sociocultural factors including class and gender shape their world and their work.

Assessment

An essay (2000 words) 50%: and Interview/fieldwork task : 50%.
