Peninsula Second semester 2007 (Day)
Singapore Term 3 2007 (Off-campus)
A study of the different theories of learning in relation to early childhood education today will occur. The development of early childhood education internationally, especially theories and societal factors which have shaped them will be studied alongside. Philosophical approaches including Reggio Emilia, and developmentally appropriate practices and socio-cultural theory will be examined.
Upon successful completion of this unit, students should have developed knowledge and understanding of a range of theories that have influenced early childhood practices and curriculum today; acquired knowledge of the evolution of early childhood services internationally; identified the historical, political, social and cultural factors that have influenced these; demonstrated the ability to reflect on and discuss a variety of philosophical approaches to early childhood curriculum and practices.
Class presentation and paper (Equivalent to 1000 words) 30%. Essay (3000 words) 70%.
