ECE2062 - Switching electronics

6 points, SCA Band 2, 0.125 EFTSL

Undergraduate Faculty of Engineering

Leader: D Holmes

Offered

Clayton Second semester 2007 (Day)
Malaysia Second semester 2007 (Day)
Os-iran Second semester 2007 (Day)

Synopsis

The unit begins with fundamentals of non-linear switching circuits and their response to discontinuous excitation. It then considers semiconductor device dynamics, transistor switching processes, and second order effects such as Miller capacitance, ground bounce, and parasitic inductances and capacitances. Next, CAD tools for circuit design/analysis and PCB layout introduced. Finally, these concepts are applied to switched digital logic families, looking at propagation delays, metastability and digital interconnection design, and then to switched energy applications such as diode rectifiers, DC-DC converters, switched mode power supplies, and soft switching/resonant switching strategies.

Objectives

To understand the use of semiconductor devices as switches, both in logic circuits that form the basis of computers and similar electronic devices, and in switched energy conversion systems such as electronic power supplies, motor drive converters and dc-ac inverters.

Assessment

Laboratory and assignment work: 30%
Examinations (3 hours): 70%. Student must achieve a mark of 45% in each component to achieve an overall pass grade.

Contact hours

3 hours lectures, 3 hours laboratory and practice classes and 6 hours of private study per week
