Synopsis

This unit will introduce students to Asian theatre work, both past and present. A special focus will be given to recent developments in Asian theatre, including the community theatre movement in the Phillipines and Thailand; contemporary Japanese theatre such as Butoh; and intercultural work by Ong Keng Sen (Singapore) and Rustom Bharucha (India). The unit will emphasise reading this performance work in the historical and political context of Asian societies.

Assessment

Class exercise (2700 word equivalent): 60%
Essay (1800 words): 40%
Third-year students will be expected to have undertaken further reading into the history and traditions of different Asian theatre practices
