This unit will introduce students to three aspects of women's work in the theatre - writing, acting and directing. It will consider some major theatre works written or created by women, such as Aphra Behn, Caryl Churchill, Sarah Bernhardt, Marilyn Monroe, Maria Irene Fornes, Jenny Kemp, Anne Bogart, Ariane Mnouchkine. A special focus will be given to the ways in which feminism has impacted on the theatre in critical and creative ways.
