Synopsis

An introduction to the ways in which meanings are communicated in the theatre. The course is based on the assumption that the study of any theatrical text is incomplete if it is not related to models of performance, whether those are historical or contemporary, actual or hypothetical. The seminars will normally involve intensive work on particular sequences from the prescribed plays.

Objectives

This subject will introduce students to the ways in which meanings are communicated in the theatre and to the theoretical implications of those processes. The emphasis in seminars will be on the relationship between text and performance, and this will normally involve intensive work on particular sequences from the plays. While the subject is not concerned with the teaching or assessment of performance skills in themselves, and will not assume any level of expertise of that kind, participation in these activities will be a requirement.
Students in DTS1060 should develop:

  1. An understanding of the relation of the written text to performance possibilities, and of both to the processes of critical interpretation.
  2. A knowledge of theories and procedures appropriate to the analysis of the relationship between written and performance text.
  3. The ability to articulate critical interpretations of dramatic texts and processes in systematic written argument and clear and confident oral presentation.
  4. The ability to embody critical interpretations of dramatic texts in practical performance work.
  5. Growing confidence in the preparation and presentation of performance work with and for other students in the course.
  6. The attitudes to their work and to others which are specified in the general learning objectives for the Department of English and the Centre for Drama and Theatre Studies.

Essay (1500 words): 25%
Creative/Performance project: 25%
Examination (2 hours): 50%
