Clayton Second semester 2007 (Day)
This unit will extend on the work completed in CHI4430 by introducing students to further aspects of the Chinese language as it is used in academic writing within the Chinese humanities. It will cover a range of key topics in the disciplines of literature, politics, history and cultural studies, as these are discussed and written about in the Chinese language. It will also examine and compare Chinese and Western styles of academic writing, research methods and goals. Questions of translation, both linguistic and cultural, will be central to this unit.
Upon successful completion of this unit, students will be expected to have acquired:
One essay (2,250 words): 50%
Class translation project (750 words): 20%
One seminar presentation (approx 750 words): 15%
One literature review (approx 750 words): 15%.
3 hours (3 x 1 hour seminars) per week
