Synopsis

This unit continues on from Chinese 11, helping students to understand Chinese language as it used to express complex ideas of contemporary Chinese writers about social, political and cultural changes in post-Mao China through an investigation into literature writings in Chinese language,. Through various research projects, this unit will also help students to write critical essays in Chinese language for academic purposes.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students will be expected to have acquired an ability to write and speak effectively in standard Chinese on a range of intellectual issues in post-Mao China. More specifically, students are expected to improve:

  1. their understanding of key issues in contemporary Chinese literature and cultural issues;
  2. their knowledge of recent developments in Chinese literature and Chinese cinema;
  3. their understanding of Chinese language as it used to express complex social, cultural, political and economic change in contemporary China;
  4. their basic analytical and language skills necessary for research in Chinese studies.

Assessment

Two written research projects in Chinese (3000 Chinese characters each) : 50%
One seminar paper in Chinese (1500 Chinese characters) : 25%
Oral presentation (Using seminar paper) : 15%
Class attendance (On going assessment) : 5%
Class performance (On going assessment) : 5%
