Synopsis

Familiarisation of classical methods of analysis and modern instrumental techniques used in pharmaceutical and related industries. The focus is on the application of techniques of atomic and molecular analysis for the identification, qualitative and quantitative analysis of pharmaceuticals and related compounds. Methods include titrimetric analyses, spectrophotometric analyses, atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy, electroanalytical methods including potentiometry, coulometry, conductometry, voltammetry and polarography, chromatographic applications such as gas-liquid chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and planar chromatography.

At the completion of this unit, students will:

Final exam: 70% (3 hours). Practical exam 10%; Practical work 20%;

Contact hours

36 hours of Lectures and Tutorials; 9 x 4hr Practical experiments.
