Synopsis

Synthetic Chemistry A lays a foundation of knowledge about the structure and reactivity of the key functional groups found in pharmaceuticals. Participants in this unit will also be introduced to the art of designing and performing multi-step syntheses of bioactive compounds. Knowledge in this area will be further extended in the semester two unit, Synthetic Chemistry B.

Objectives

At the completion of this unit the participant will:

• Have detailed knowledge of the structure and properties of the common functional groups contained in pharmaceuticals.
• Be able to name organic molecules according to IUPAC nomenclature.
• Understand the reactivity of these functional groups.
• Understand basic reaction to mechanisms.
• Understand basic reaction kinetics and thermodynamics relevant to organic synthesis.
• Have the practical ability to perform a basic synthetic step.
• Have the practical ability to isolate and purify reaction products.

Assessment

Examination: 50% (2 hours); Mid-Semester Test (1 Hour) 20%; Practical Work 30%;

Contact hours

12 weeks of 2 Lectures per week, 1 week of 1 Lecture / 1 Tutorial, and 9 x 4hr Practicals.
