This unit introduces students to the broad range of drug uses, and consequent problems that may arise. The effects of alcohol and other drug use will be examined with respect to individuals, family groups, cultural groups and society. Problematic drug use and addiction will be examined, together with prevention strategies and treatment approaches. The diverse range of responses to problematic substance use will be emphasised.
Agency visit and tutorial presentation: 40%
Test (1 hour): 20%
Essay (2000 words): 40%
Third-year students will be required to write their essays from a separate list of topics and will be required to show a greater depth of critical analysis of argument and issues.
2 hours (1 x 1 hour lecture and 1 x 1 hour tutorial) per week
